More ideas and research

As one of my ideas was to look at reflections and in a way document the process of me travelling somewhere (perhaps with self-portraits), Lee Friedlander is a great photographer to look at.

Friedlander has been making photographs since the 1950s and has covered many bases of subject matter. He started out photographing jazz musicians, has documented the changing landscape of America, done more portraiture, namely self-portraits and more recently has been photographing his travels and things close to him. Some of these images you can still see huge influences and similarities to earlier work but it is different, particularly those with cars as he's been doing those for years now. The work he makes now is more personal whereas as before it was more a comment and a record of something.

The project that's particularly relevant for my own is "America By Car". Some of the photos themselves are simple, but it's his composition and putting the little details together that make them fascinating. Not to mention they document a classic aspect of America that is instantly recognisable. While I'll never be able to create anything quite like that, I would like to try and create something typically British or recognisible for my hometown, Cleethorpes.

One thing I particularly like about them is the use of the car. Whether it's the dashboard or the mirror it seems to be a portrait of him. His choice of car, how he chooses to have the settings, whether the window is down or up. It's like he's making self-portraits without the need to have himself in them, because the car represents him enough.

The other thing is how the images work together, when displayed all together...like the way Friedlander's were recently..

I've already taken some images for this style and idea, so these will be in my next post.
